Canada is hoping to develop a new pathway to permanent residency for international students, hinted Immigration Minister Sean Fraser in an online interview with Apply Board.
Fraser spoke with the Ontario-based educational technology company earlier this month, which was founded by Canadian immigrants in 2015. The immigration minister highlighted the importance of immigration and the contributions of international students to the Canadian economy during that interview.
"We have a clear message for overseas students and graduates," Fraser added. "We don't only want you to come here to study. We're hoping to create pathways that will allow you to stay here and contribute long after your academic career is over."
International students will soon have a new path to permanent residence.
According to the immigration minister, the policy work is being done this year and a permanent pathway for international students will be rolled out a soon as that solution is ready to go.
According to IRCC data, 621,565 study permits were issued last year, up nearly 17.7% from 528,190 in 2020.
The rebound in study permits last year puts Canada a hair’s breadth – only 2.6 percentage points – from hitting its record-setting level of 638,280 study permits issued in 2019, the last full year before the pandemic.
Canada wants to go much further in terms of expediting the processing of study visas.
International students can come to Canada on a Study Permit and then apply for a Post-Graduation Work Permit. This puts them in a position to apply for permanent residence through the Express Entry system.
