In the first quarter, 108,000 new immigrants were admitted to Canada, with Indians leading the charts.

Canada, which aims to admit a record 432,000 new immigrants in 2022, is on track to hit this mark as the country invited 108,000 new visitors in the first three months of the year.

"Canada is proud to be a destination of choice for so many people around the world, and we will continue to work hard to provide the best experience possible for them," said Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, releasing the figures for the first quarter on Thursday.

Considering the absence of a country-by-country breakdown, Indians are the most common immigrant group in Canada this year.

Nearly 100,000 Indians became permanent residents of Canada in 2021, when the country welcomed a record 405,000 new immigrants.

Over 210,000 permanent residents became Canadian citizens between 2021 and 2022.

According to statistics released by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), 450,000 study permit applications were submitted.

As of December 31, 2021, Canada had over 622,000 international students, with Indians accounting for 217,410 of them.
